Part of its Information Systems strategy, Bridgepoint Health’s vision was to simplify access to all hospital information and applications prior to launching a broad-reaching, centralized Hospital Information System (HIS) to replace a labyrinth of documents, applications and access methods.

Taking stock of the hospital’s extensive network of information and applications, the challenge was to create a fast and simple web portal that was easy to use while shielding users from the technical complexities behind the solution. The seamless integration of key data sources and applications and the simplified, secured, and rapid access to that data, were key to engineering the right portal environment.

- What We Did

ThinkWrap developed and successfully deployed a flexible, identity-driven Liferay portal environment—one that powered tailored views to information and applications—through a customized web user interface. Key components of this solution included:
- • Portal technology, Liferay Enterprise Edition
- • Single Sign-on
- • Identity management
- • MEDITECH integration
- • Electronic document management system
- • Balanced scorecard
- • Enterprise report delivery (Microsoft Reports and SAS)
- • Application delivery for remote users (Citrix)

- How We Did It

To cultivate the online community early on, we launched with specific applications that drove adoption including unit financial reports and restricted, portal-only access to the new Hospital Information System. In addition, we:
- • Introduced the new portal environment with a design concept that was similar to common websites; one that would readily engage employees through a familiar user interface.
- • Enhanced user interaction, practically, by pushing information from back-end systems onto pages to reduce clicks; enabling end users to navigate their portal environment quickly.
- • Associated content with user profiles to provide customized content based on administrative roles.
- • Eliminated dual user id’s previously required for remote access.
- • Automatically sensed access location to manage security and applications that were delivered remotely.

- What We Achieved
- Delivering an enterprise-class, single communication framework for an institution with limited human and financial resources led to improved productivity and optimized workflows through efficient access to data, while safeguarding patient and business information with access security across the organization.
- • Single Sign-on reduced password reset support calls by 95%.
- • Remote access processes were dramatically simplified.
- • Reduced sign-on time by 80% in a majority of instances.
As no other hospitals were building a similar comprehensive solution at the time, the technical complexities of this project, and its subsequent success served as a benchmark for customizing a secure, unified workflow experience to several more healthcare organizations including Bruyere Continuing Care, Ontario Nurses Association and Medbuy, among others.
